With classes and practices already behind us, the start of a new season is closely upon us. This blogger is going to have to change his name due the the conference name change. What was the CVAC is now Conference Carolinas because of the change in schools. When Longwood left the CVAC in 1999 the conference no longer had any Virgina schools in it. So a name change is been long time coming. But I am looking forward to this year and will do my best to keep everyone updated on the sports from around the Conference Carolinas!

Anderson University took home the its second big piece of hardware this year when the CVAC announced that Anderson had won the Hawn Cup! Anderson is the first South Carolina school to win the Hawn Cup–thanks Peeler.
The CVAC website wrote a great article on this so just follow the link and enjoy the article.
The good news is the Beville Cup will have some company this year in the Abney Athletic Center.

I found out yesterday afternoon that St. Andrews withdrew their baseball team from the tournament. I waited until I recievd further confirmation before I posted, but the CVAC website changed their bracket this morning. I have been trying to get more information abou the reason’s they withdrew, but as of right now this is all I can report.
Good news for my bracket is I had St. Andrews going two and done.

Here is the bracket I have filled out for the baseball tournament that starts Thursday. Instead of having two brackets, I am just going to do one. The team names in blue represent the first round match-ups. Everything after that will be in red and those are my picks.
I think there is not doubt that Mt. Olive is the best team in the conference and possible one of the best ever to play in the conference. If Mt. Olive makes it unbeaten to the finals, which I believe they will, they will stacked and ready. But, like I have said all year Erskine is not the teams of the past and I have them going out early. Anderson I think has the bats, experience and pitching to compete, but can they hold it together against teams that beat them already? Belmont Abbey has to prove to me they have a bullpen to make it as far as I have them going, but I am basing this off their bats.
This will open in excel 2007-cvac-tournament-bracket.xls.

With the CVAC tournament next week, the teams finished play this weekend. Here are the final standings…
- Mount Olive 20-3
- Belmont Abbey 16-7
- Pfeiffer 13-10
- Erskine 13-11
- Anderson 12-11-1
- Barton 9-13-1
- Coker 9-14
- Limestone 7-15
- St. Andrews 4-19
Just like I did with the basketball tournaments, I will have brackets up later this week to fill out and give my predictions for the tournament winner. Congrats to Mt. Olive on taking the regular season.
On another note, I am very unhappy with Anderson. The team went into this weekend in fourth place and third place team Pfeiffer playing Mt. Olive. Pfeiffer ended up losing all three game and gave Anderson a chance to slide into third, but the Trojans couldn’t get it done. They lost the first two games and then tied because of the rain. Taking two out of three from Barton should not have been that difficult. From what I was told the Barton pitchers did a good job of keeping Anderson’s hitters off balance. But it is tournament time and time to put the regular season behind us.

Update: Mount Olive clinches first place in 2007.
Week 8 Standings:
- Mount Olive 18-3
- Belmont Abbey 14-7
- Pfeiffer 13-8
- Anderson 12-9
- Erskine 13-11
- Coker 9-12
- Barton 7-13
- Limestone 6-14
- St. Andrews 3-18
Looking at the scores from this weekend, there really isn’t anything surprising that happened. If I was betting, man I would have picked all of the winners.
This coming weekend is the final weekend for conference play. Pfeiffer, Anderson and Erskine are all one game apart for third place, but the kicker is Pfeiffer has to play Mt. Olive. Anderson goes to Barton to play, and Erskine has the final weekend off. So it really comes down to Pfeiffer and Anderson for third. Pfeiffer holds the head-to-head between these two teams so Anderson has to sweep Barton. There is no way Pfeiffer can sweep Mt. Olive, but they may be able to take one from them. Should be a good weekend and I will be watching scores and will probably post a special update Saturday after the double-headers

Here are the week seven standings.
- Mount Olive 15-3
- Belmont Abbey 14-7
- Pfeiffer 10-8
- Anderson 9-9
- Coker 9-9
- Erskine 10-11
- Barton 7-10
- Limestone 6-11
- St. Andrews 3-15
Well, we started the week off with the top four teams playing each other, but after this weekend Coker has gotten back in the hunt. Anderson and Pfeiffer both had their faith in their hands, and Pfeiffer came through. Anderson on the other hand had the chance to win the series with Mount Olive after winning the first game but couldn’t deliver. Pfeiffer held the head-to-head with Anderson and would have remained in third, but with Anderson’s loss they are now tied with Coker. Not too mention that these two teams play this weekend in Anderson. Should be another good CVAC match-up.
On a side note, I would like to point out that the series between Anderson and Mt. Olive was a dandy. Yes, game two got out of hand on the scoreboard, but both teams still smiled and played hard. This Mt. Olive team is a humble team. They have fun and play clean baseball. I was very impressed with their style of play and the character of their players. This just goes to show the CVAC is filled with quality student athletes.
