With classes and practices already behind us, the start of a new season is closely upon us. This blogger is going to have to change his name due the the conference name change. What was the CVAC is now Conference Carolinas because of the change in schools. When Longwood left the CVAC in 1999 the conference no longer had any Virgina schools in it. So a name change is been long time coming. But I am looking forward to this year and will do my best to keep everyone updated on the sports from around the Conference Carolinas!

Anderson University took home the its second big piece of hardware this year when the CVAC announced that Anderson had won the Hawn Cup! Anderson is the first South Carolina school to win the Hawn Cup–thanks Peeler.
The CVAC website wrote a great article on this so just follow the link and enjoy the article.
The good news is the Beville Cup will have some company this year in the Abney Athletic Center.

Pfeiffer takes Anderson in the CVAC women’s basketball final. Well, my girls gave it a good run. I am glad they showed up to play in tournament. I watched some of the game on the internet webcast and it appeared that Anderson’s leading scorer got in foul trouble and was held to 16 points. I figured Pfeiffer’s Truslow would be a factor, but she fell victim to foul trouble, as well. Both of these teams should be in the regionals and make a strong showing for the CVAC. Who knows we could see these two teams face off for the Regional Championship.
Barton won the men’s CVAC Title this year over Mount Olive. I have really written on the men’s tournament or any of the teams because Barton was clearly the best team. Barton and Mt. Olive will probably make the Regionals, but I haven’t looked at the other competition as closely as I have followed the women’s teams.
Congratulations to both teams and I know the CVAC will be represented well in the NCAA Regionals.

Well, I was wrong. Anderson went out against Belmont Wednesday and showed they can play basketball and they want it this year. I still had my doubts but after they went out tonight and beat Barton by almost 20 — completely messed my bracket up — I welcome them back. Yes, I am a student from Anderson and have watched them play all year. At times they looked like they wanted to play and other times they looked like they could care less, but I am glad they decided to show up to play. I will have to say I still don’t know if they can beat Pfeiffer, but the championship game does have the two best teams playing for the title Saturday.
I would also like to take this time to congratulate Deidra Langston of Anderson for being named this years CVAC and First Team All CVAC. Langston was also named to the All-Time CVAC team. I would also like to extend my congratulations to Anderson Latrice Thomas for being named to the Honorable Mention Team this year.

I got all my picks right for round one in the tournament. Even the Coker Lees-Mcrae upset, which isn’t much of an upset. I have Anderson beating Belmont Wednesday, but that is the one game that scares me. Belmont beat Anderson in Belmont about two weeks ago. Anderson has lost 4 of their 5 five games and has struggled all year, but the game is at Anderson, where they haven’t lost all year.
I have had some questions about my pick of St. Andrews over Mt. Olive and my response has been look at the records. Mt. Olive is 11-9 in the CVAC and St. Andrews is 15-5, and that is a four game gap. Not to mention St. Andrews has already beat Mt. Olive twice.
All the other games Wednesday should be won by the top seeded team. Yes, the Anderson game is the only one I am worried about that could bust my bracket.

Update: I made a mistake on the brackets when I seeded Limestone as the 8 seed and Lees-Mcrae as the 7 seed. I have fixed it in both brackets.

I have to say that Anderson has been a big disappointment this year. I have them winning in the second round, but the players just don’t have the heart. They are led by a senior All-American Deidra Langston and forward Latrice Thomas. They have a good offensive and defensive scheme but just can’t seem to finish. I hope they prove me wrong though. I have Pfieffer taking the title because no one but Barton and Anderson can hang with them talent wise. Pfieffer hosting doesn’t hurt their chances either. In college sports home court advantage and momentum is key. The Barton-Anderson game will wear both of those teams out leaving them with nothing against Pfieffer. I have enjoyed the season and look to make it out to the tournament to see the finale. I do think that the CVAC is a very strong conference, and a CVAC team will win the NCAA Regionals this year.

The conference tournament is right around the corner and anyone good win! I do however, think that there are only three teams that have the best shot to win: Barton, Anderson and Pfeiffer. Bad news for Barton and Anderson is Pfeiffer’s Truslow was on fire last week against a decent St. Andrews team and Anderson. Even worse news for Anderson is they have lost two straight to Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey. I think St. Andrews is the sleeper team– still only a decent team– but they are sitting right outside the bubble and have played some good close games against the top teams. Their chances look even better with a struggling Anderson. I will say that this confernce is a very strong conference with four teams in the top 10 of the region polls: Pfeiffer at 2, Anderson at 3, Barton at 4, and St. Andrews at 6. As soon as I get the playoff schedule I will get it up.
